featuring Emmylou Harris
Maria Muldaur, Van Dyke Parks
and Friends & Family
Believe it or not, Christmas is coming and so is Rufus and Martha Wainwright's Christmas 101. The legendary McGarrigle/Wainwright Christmas show was started in 2005, inspired and masterminded by their late mother Kate McGarrigle. The show, full of eclectic carols in French and English, traditional and not so traditional, starring McGarrigles, Wainwrights and many friends - famous and infamous - played two shows in Montreal and was a huge success. Kate's dream then became to take the Christmas show across the country - playing in as many cities as possible. In 2006, Kate was diagnosed with sarcoma, a rare and deadly cancer. After she passed in 2010, Rufus and Martha Wainwright, Kate's children, decided last year to revive the family tradition and start up the Christmas shows again as a way to honor their mother and raise money for the cause. Kate had always wanted to show to come to the West Coast and this year, it is happening. Rufus and Martha Wainwrights' Christmas 101 is starting out in December 19th in Oakland. Featuring Rufus and Martha and much of the family (aunts, cousins), several friends and many special guests including two legendary artists, Emmylou Harris and Maria Muldaur.
All proceeds from the concert will be going to The Kate McGarrigle Foundation. This wonderful family tradition, passed down to the next generation, is sure to delight Californians all along the 101.
For Rufus & Martha Wainwright's Christmas 101, we have special Gala tickets for sale where $101 of each ticket goes to the Kate McGarrigle Foundation. Kate was Rufus & Martha's mother, she died almost 3 years ago from sarcoma - a rare and underfunded cancer. Kate started the family Christmas show 12 years ago and in the last 3 years of her life, turned the legendary McGarrigle/Wainwright Christmas show into a benefit where proceeds went to her charity. Her children and family are continuing her legacy and desire to raise money to fund research and raise awareness about sarcoma. In keeping with the theme of the show Christmas 101, a Gala ticket adds $101 to the price of your ticket and guarantees you a great seat, invitation to attend a reception right after the show where you can meet and greet the artists, and special gift bag to commemorate the evening. Best of all, you can contribute to the Kate McGarrigle Foundation and help Martha & Rufus in their quest for a cure for this deadly cancer.
